Phantogram: Awkward Middle School Years Turned Electro-Pop Phenom

Phantogram’s Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter go back; back before the legions of devoted fans, before the headlining shows, before Barthel’s (on-point) asymmetrical haircut. In fact, the Greenwich, New York, pair met in middle school — Barthel’s older sister was good friends with Carter. Although they didn't create music together until their 20s, they did a number of other things: Embraced the grunge look (“I tried to have the grunge look but I was too gross looking I think,” says Barthel), skateboarded (“Josh was a big skateboarder and I wanted to be cool, so I tried to skateboard and accomplished an ollie once, but that’s not that rad,” recalls Barthel) and smoked in a graveyard behind school.
