On Sept. 29, 1954, New York Giants outfielder Willie Mays made a catch that has gone down as one of the greatest in MLB history.
In Game 1 of the 1954 World Series, the Cleveland Indians' Vic Wertz stepped to the plate with runners on first and second in a 2-2 game during the top of the eighth inning. On the fourth pitch of the at-bat, Mays made the most memorable play of his 22-year career.
Wertz hit a drive to deep center field, which sent Mays running toward the outfield wall. He made an unbelievable over-the-shoulder catch and then alertly threw the ball back to the infield. Thus, "The Catch" was born.
The Giants won the game in 10 innings, 5-2, and won the series in four games.
Given the situation, it's hard to argue that The Catch isn't the greatest play ever made on a baseball field. However, when Mays talked about it back in 2010, he claimed it wasn't the best play he ever made.
Regardless of where it ranks among the greatest plays of all time, Mays' remarkable catch still leaves people shaking their heads 60 years later.
