Devon Still's life drastically changed earlier this summer, but the Cincinnati Bengals are willing to stand by one of their own and help him through a difficult time.
On June 2, Still's four-year-old daughter, Leah, was diagnosed with pediatric cancer. That has put things in perspective for the defensive lineman.
Still—a 2012 second-round pick—missed the Bengals' 53-man roster, but the team wanted to make sure that he had some support during his daughter's difficult battle. After cutting him over the weekend, Cincinnati signed the 25-year-old to its practice squad so that he could keep his insurance and continue to get paid.
As much as he'd love to be on the roster, Still understood the team's decision and even admitted he can't be totally committed to the team right now.
Here's what he had to say on the matter, via Bengals.com's Geoff Hobson : "I can’t give football 100 percent right now. In the business aspect they want guys solely focused on football. And that’s understandable. We’re here to win this city a Super Bowl and right now I’m just not in position where I can give football 100 percent."
Understandably, Still is unable to give all of his attention to football right now. That doesn't matter to the team. Cincinnati is doing what it can to help one of its players as he supports his sick daughter.
Sometimes the game has to take a backseat, and great stories like this remind us of that fact.
