Lake-effect snow left the Buffalo area under three feet of the white stuff after a storm moved through New York overnight, and the storm isn't over yet.
Thundersnow (a thunderstorm with snow instead of rain) was also reported in the area, a result of the extremely cold air blowing over relatively mild lake waters, creating a great deal of atmospheric instability. These thunderstorms can deliver phenomenal snowfall rates of 5 inches per hour or more
