Cristiano Ronaldo picked up two assists as Real Madrid edged Malaga 2-1 at La Rosaleda to win a 16th consecutive match for the first time in their history.
Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale were the beneficiaries of Ronaldo's playmaking, but the guests were made to hold their breath after Roque Santa Cruz pulled back a late goal after beating Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas with a header from Arthur Boka's cross.
Overall, there were several standout performances on the south coast of Spain, as well as some that were rather less impressive.
