As Dutch legend Marco Van Basten turns 50 today, we were reminded of this incredible goal that the striker scored in the Euro 1988 final.
The ball came floated in from the left by Arnold Muhren but despite the seemingly impossible angle Van Basten simply crashed the ball in on the volley.
Considering the stage—the Dutch went on to win the match 2-0 and claim their only major international title—it must rank as one of the greatest goals ever scored.
Van Basten had a hatful of those types of goals throughout his career, and he was renowned for acrobatic finishes.
He won trophy after trophy with Ajax and AC Milan, and only injuries stopped him from breaking more records—he played his last club game, the 1993 Champions League final, aged 28.
