MARINOVKA, Ukraine — In eastern Ukraine, he is known as 'The Body Collector.'
Every few days, he drives out to the front lines with a motley crew of Ukrainian men to collect the corpses of the fallen — a sometimes macabre but always essential task, and one he does voluntarily without pay.
Yaroslav Zhilkin, a burly, former businessman, began collecting bodies for burial a few months ago as the bloody conflict between rebels and Ukrainian troops ravaged the country’s eastern regions and the dead began to pile up.
Negotiating with commanders on the ground, the 43-year-old got access to territories controlled by Russian-backed separatists so that he could retrieve the bodies of Ukrainian soldiers cut down in battle.
