Borussia Dortmund are currently sitting in 16th place in the Bundesliga standings after a demoralizing 2-1 loss to rival Bayern Munich on Saturday. The pain from that loss may extend well beyond matchday, as star center back Mats Hummels reportedly injured his foot during the contest.
AFP reporter Ryland James relayed a description of the injury after the match:
Fox Soccer Trax reported that he left the game at halftime, with Neven Subotic coming on as a replacement:
Hummels' absence from the second half had a noticeable effect on the game, as Bayern scored two goals in the second period for a well-deserved comeback victory. Borussia Dortmund—who finished a distant second to Bayern in the 2013-14 Bundesliga season—already have seven losses on the season and are currently in the relegation zone.
With goals hard to come by this season, a potentially leaky defense without Hummels could make life very difficult for fans of a team that expects to be fighting for a Champions League spot year in and year out.
