Just a few months after Microsoft agreed to acquire Nokia, the latter shocked the tech community by releasing the Nokia X, a smartphone that ran Android. As Mashable's tech editor put it at the time, "It's happened. Nokia just debuted an Android phone. And the world is still turning."

Hell might have frozen over then, but it appears to have thawed out again.

Satya Nadella, Microsoft's recently appointed CEO, revealed in a memo to employees on Thursday that the company plans to nix the Nokia X Android phone efforts and double down on making — wait for it — Windows phones.
