One week after his diatribe on net neutrality went viral, John Oliver lambasted FIFA for its ugly business practices.
In particular, the Last Week Tonight host slammed the soccer organization for parasitically acquiring World Cup proceeds, overriding Brazilian laws banning alcohol in stadiums, and for its decision to hold the 2022 World Cup in Qatar due to the social and physical climate.
A few highlights from the 13-minute rant:
On FIFA taking most of the money generated from the World Cup : "Somewhere, Wesley Snipes is going, 'So soccer was the answer.'"
On Brazil's laws against selling alcohol in stadiums due to high death rates, which FIFA overruled because it's sponsored by Budweiser: "You can either be horrified by that or relieved that FIFA isn't also sponsored by cocaine and chainsaws."
On a commentator's note that FIFA and bribery go together like peanut butter and jelly: "Peanut butter and jelly are supposed to go together. FIFA and bribery should go together like peanut butter and a child with a deadly nut allergy." Read more...
