Tail of AirAsia Flight QZ8501 lifted from sea floor, but no black boxes found

The first large section of the crashed AirAsia flight, a tail section emblazoned with the airline's logo, was lifted from the sea floor on Saturday. But investigators didn't find the black boxes they hoped would be inside.


The recovery comes nearly two weeks after Flight 8501 went down in the Java Sea, killing all 162 people on board the aircraft.



The bodies of four more passengers were recovered on Friday — two of them still strapped in their seats on the ocean floor — bringing the total number of those recovered to 48.


The tail section was brought to the surface using specialized balloons, from a depth of about 100 feet, and local news outlets showed the portion of the plane resting on the deck of a ship. Read more...
