The Footage You're About To See Hasn't Seen The Light Of Day In A Half-Century

When we think about the civil rights movement now, it's often with rose-tinted glasses: a couple of stirring speeches, some impressively organized marches, and a few folks songs to boot.

The reality of the movement, and particularly the summer of 1964, was both more mundane and more tragic. It's filled with volunteers who grindingly pounded the pavement to organize voter registration and carefully prepared for the violence that was sure to follow.

Check out some very rare footage of that summer and the story of three missing volunteers that shook a nation out of its convenient apathy.

This rare footage was made available to us by the good folks at CBS Live Experiences. They're putting on a great interactive live event on July 24 that'll feature even more of this incredible footage and a roundtable about the past, present, and future of civil rights. And I'll be there too, so be sure to tune in!
