These Guys Figured Out Where The Internet Was So They Could Take It And Give It To Everyone

Who knew Occupy Wall Street was actually an insane tech genius breeding ground that might help keep us emailing in peace forever and ever? You! If you watch this.

It's a half-hour mini-documentary, so if you don’t have the 30 minutes to watch it all, skip to the meaty goodness that is the answers to these three questions:

  • What’s a decentralized Internet look like? At 3:12.

  • Why is decentralizing the Internet a thought worth thinking? 12:38-14:16.

  • How can we do it? 15:48-17:34.

Vice has a documentary platform called Motherboard, and I found this documentary there after I read an article on the Daily Dot about a new app called FireChat that is helping people all over the world form mesh networks. And I was like, “I MUST KNOW MORE.”

If you’re thinking, "WHOA! Complicated much?" You can, and that would be OK, but it’s not complicated — this whole shebang is more like a fun science project. Move over, baking-soda volcano!

What’s a mesh network? This term basically means a network that can’t be censored by the government or a big ol’ business. Comes in handy in places where dictators do actually turn off the Internet sometimes. (Yes! That’s a thing that can happen!)

For more on the nice, genius bearded guy from Missouri, here’s a Q&A he did, and here’s the Twitter feed of his organization, the Free Network Foundation.
