Reports of Meerkat's death greatly exaggerated

Meerkat isn't dead yet.


This might go against the conventional wisdom that the live-streaming service is on the way out because of its powerful rival Periscope



A little more than a week ago, Twitter launched Periscope, a live video sharing application that stole Meerkat's buzz. On the day it launched, Periscope topped Meerkat in Apple's rankings of free apps. The next day, Periscope passed it in the number of tweets with links to its live broadcasts, according to data from Topsy.


While the Topsy data suggested Periscope was cannibalizing Meerkat, app rankings clearly showed a fast decline in new users for Meerkat and a spike for Periscope.
