The reality of Ukraine cease-fire: An explosion every few seconds

HORLIVKA, Ukraine — Yuri was on the phone with his mother when the explosion from the shell blew off both his legs.


"There was this flash and suddenly I just didn't understand anything," he said, lying in bed at Horlivka Hospital Two, wincing from pain as there is no access to proper painkillers.



"I saw myself lying on the pavement with my legs torn off. So much blood...So much pain. I was lucky — being on the phone to my mum — she heard everything."


His mother called an ambulance. Not so the bystanders.


"People ran out but they didn't help me or call an ambulance. They took the phone from my hand and they stole it." Read more...
