Doctors diagnosed San Diego State senior forward Dwayne Polee II with a non-life-threatening form of cardiac arrhythmia, which allowed him back on the court for the first time in roughly two months, per Mark Zeigler of U-T San Diego.
Polee played 13 minutes and scored three points in the Aztecs' 74-56 win over San Jose State on Saturday. It was his first competitive game since he collapsed during a meeting with UC Riverside back on December 22. He was quickly tended to by medical personnel and carried off the court on a gurney.
Polee and SDSU head coach Steve Fisher discussed his return after Saturday's victory.
Some might wonder if it's a good idea for Polee to play in game situations again. To the contrary, he remains confident that he's not putting himself in harm's way, per Zeigler :
The main doctor I've been working with, Dr. Doug Gibson, he broke it down for my mom and me, that this isn ’t life threatening and that even if it were to happen again—and he doesn't think it will—it's 100 percent not life threatening. I've seen six doctors. They all said the same thing.
Polee is averaging eight points and 2.6 rebounds per game this year. His comeback couldn't have come at a better time as the Aztecs prepare for the NCAA tournament.
San Diego State is a veritable lock for the Big Dance even if it fails to win the Mountain West tournament. And in the event it gets there, the team will need Polee to provide some scoring either off the bench or in a starting role.
