Watch Surgery on the Oculus Rift, But Maybe Do It After Lunch

While the early prototype Oculus Rift headsets may have given some an upset stomach, a new virtual reality demo is taking queasyness to a new level.


Surgeons in France filmed a hip replacement operation and then turned it into a virtual reality video experience that can be downloaded for the Rift. The experiment is eventually meant to be a teaching tool.



"When you are a surgeon in training, you watch a lot of procedure, but you are very rarely in place of the primary surgeon. This project uses virtual reality to improve surgical training by putting the trainee in the shoes of the surgeon," said orthopedic surgeon Dr. Thomas Gregory, who performed the hip replacement at European Georges Pompidou Hospital in Paris.
