Watch things get better with time!
NASA satellites helped create this animated GIF showing air pollution drop between 2005 and 2011. You can see the biggest concentrations (specifically nitrogen dioxide) around Chicago and the Northeast Corridor, but thanks to air pollution regulations for cleaner cars and coal-burning power plants, along with improved technologies, we’re all seeing cleaner air even though the number of cars on the road has increased. Yay! Three cheers for good news on the environment! (Psst. In case this left you feeling too good, you can instead worry about high power plant emissions of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas.)
This animated GIF was created by NASA Goddard's Scientific Visualization Studio and T. Schindler. The studio also has a ton of other cool visualizations created by artists and scientists putting their heads together. Thumbnail mage via Thinkstock.
