They're here.
4K displays are now available for smartphones now that Sharp has introduced the world's first 5.5-inch display with 3,840 x 2,160 "Ultra HD" resolution. That translates into a ridonkulous pixel density of 806 pixels per inch (ppi).
For those scoring at home, the puny Quad HD display on the 5.5-inch LG G3 has a pixel density of 538 ppi. The crazy-sharp display was first spotted on a Greek tech blog by Phonearena .
Why on Earth would you ever want that many pixels on a smartphone, especially since human eyes can't really see any quality improvement over 300 ppi (at normal viewing distances)? Broadly, it allows the phone to reproduce, pixel for pixel, a 4K image without any resampling. That should result in both pristine, ultra-sharp imagery and encourage developers to build the experiences around 4K resolution. Read more...
