Microsoft partners with Google's Android rival Cyanogen

Cyanogen, the startup that wants to take Android from Google, has a powerful new partner: Microsoft.

The two companies formally announced a long-rumored "strategic partnership" Thursday, which will put Microsoft's apps and services on Cyanogen devices this year.

Cyanogen is a modified version of Android that doesn't rely on the Google Play Store and other Google services. This model is particularly appealing in markets like China — where Google Play is nonexistent — and other countries where third-party app stores are already popular.
