Massive Siberian wildfires have killed at least 23 people and left as many as 5,000 people homeless during the past few days, according to the Associated Press and other news sources. The fires have injured at least 850 people after they burned through entire villages in the eastern Khakasiya region during the weekend
The blazes were initially set as grassland fires for agricultural purposes, but high winds and dry conditions allowed the flames to quickly get out-of-control. Officials are investigating some of the fires for possible arson charges.
