U2's album is No. 1 on Rolling Stone's '50 Best Albums of 2014' list

Taylor Swift's 1989 is the best-selling album released this year, but it just narrowly cracked the top 10 on Rolling Stone's "50 Best Albums of 2014 " list.


The annual ranking always sparks debate among music lovers, and this year's is no different, with U2's surprise free album, Songs of Innocence, claiming the No. 1 spot



"There was no bigger album of 2014 — in terms of surprise, generosity and controversy," Rolling Stone wrote. "Songs of Innocence is also the rebirth of the year. Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. put their lives on the line: giving away 11 songs of guitar rapture and frank, emotional tales of how they became a band out of the rough streets and spiritual ferment of Seventies Dublin.
