Rumours of Real Madrid star Gareth Bale making a sensational move back to the Premier League with Manchester United seem a little pie in the sky, but the deal seems like it's starting to take shape.
Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal spent fortunes in the summer transfer window getting his squad up to scratch, but it appears he’s open to splashing yet more cash to land the mercurial Welshman.
That’s according to Shaun Custis of The Sun, who told Sky Sports show Sunday Supplement that United are very much in the market for Bale and that Madrid fans would not challenge his sale:
We know that Man United would love to get him if they could, but is it wishful thinking? There are some who say at Madrid that the fans aren’t 100 per cent behind Bale and some who think he is ok, but we could move on.
Real Madrid undoubtedly have enough firepower at their disposal to cope with selling the 25-year-old, and taking in upward of £80 million is nothing but a good thing, but Custis added that Bale wouldn’t go quietly:
Gareth Bale was obsessed with going to Real Madrid and as far as I understand still loves Real Madrid and has no wish to come back. If you talk to his advisers they claim to have no idea where this is all coming from about a possible return.
I would love to see him back because he is a tremendous player, but I think he would have to be dragged kicking and screaming out of Real Madrid because that’s where he wants to be.
Can you really blame him? Life in the Spanish capital has brought the very best out of Bale, and he’s become the cornerstone of what’s looking like a team of invincibles.
With that in mind, the Daily Mail is reporting, via Alex Harris of Daily Star , that the Welshman wants to extend his deal at the Bernabeu and put the rumours of his exit to bed.
However, selling the forward could well be in the club’s best interest, as Harris writes that any deal that sees Bale head to Old Trafford would send goalkeeper David de Gea in the opposite direction.
Real look like a complete unit, but a world-class 'keeper still eludes them, and it’s safe to say that De Gea could fill such a void.
The Spaniard has been instrumental in United’s success so far this season and could go on to be mentioned in the same breath as club greats Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar, which is why the Daily Telegraph’s Paul Haywood thinks the Red Devils would be stupid to sell him:
Anyone who says United don't need Bale isn't exactly thinking straight, as any club in the world could do with one of the best in the business, but is sacrificing a top-class keeper really worth it?
Bale will score goals and create a few too, but United have beaten sides this year simply through the heroics of De Gea between the posts. The question is, which player is more important?
So all that would be left to tempt Real Madrid into the sale is an astronomical bid coming their way, which United are more than capable of tabling.
Further adding to the story was Van Gaal’s refusal to discuss it at a recent press conference, as Manchester Evening News’ Rob Dawson revealed:
The Dutchman remaining coy on the deal is smart, with journalists and optimistic fans sniffing around for any possible links, but haven’t we seen this before?
Van Gaal kept his cards very close to his chest throughout the Angel Di Maria transfer saga, and before you knew it, the Argentinian was in red.
Bale’s transfer has far more factors acting against it, sure, and while United fans still shouldn’t get carried away, the rumour is heading in the right direction from their point of view.
