Grand jury won't indict NYPD officer in Eric Garner chokehold death

A Staten Island grand jury has decided to not indict a New York City police officer in the death of Eric Garner, a lawyer for Garner's family said Wednesday.


Garner died in July after being placed in a chokehold by police.



Jonathon Moore, an attorney for Garner's family, said Wednesday he was told there would be no indictment and said he was "astonished by the decision."


The Garner case stems from a July 17 confrontation between Officer Daniel Pantaleo and other NYPD officers who stopped him on suspicion of selling loose, untaxed cigarettes. The video shot by an onlooker shows the 43-year-old Garner, who was black, telling the officers to leave him alone and refusing to be handcuffed. Read more...
