East London residents fight back against potential rent rises from U.S. developers

LONDON — Residents of an East London housing estate have marched through the capital to protest against plans that could see them lose their homes.


Tenants of the New Era Estate in Hoxton gathered outside the offices of Westbrook Partners in Mayfair before processing through London to Downing Street. The U.S. firm is thought to be planning to refurbish the estate and then re-let the flats at full market rate, which would be unaffordable for many.



Chanting "housing is a human right, not a privilege" to the tune of "London Bridge is burning down," tenants and supporters filled the eastern half of the square. Read more...
