'S.H.I.E.L.D.' Season 2 Premiere Recap: 'Go Dark'

“Go dark.”


The first words from new director Phil Coulson in the Season 2 premiere of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. are also his first set of orders, given to Isabelle Hartley (Lucy Lawless) and a new team of mercenary agents after an exchange with a contact goes bad.

But with the shambles that S.H.I.E.L.D. is in after Season 1, and the measures its remaining agents must take to keep up their pursuit of Hydra, “go dark” might as well be the plan –- and the tone — for all of Season 2.


Their base is a secret bunker they can hardly risk leaving. Their fancy plane is of no use without a cloaking device they don’t have. Their global network of agents has been fully dismantled, mentally compromised, or worse: turned into “gifted” agents of Hydra who are seeking former S.H.I.E.L.D.-controlled artifacts now in the hands of the U.S. military – which is now hunting them, too.
