Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier left Sunday night's game against the Carolina Panthers with a right knee injury.
The Steelers' official Twitter account indicated that Shazier would be out for the remainder of Week 3:
Bleacher Report's Matt Miller observed how another Steelers linebacker in Jarvis Jones went down on Sunday:
Shazier, a rookie first-round pick out of Ohio State, has brought tremendous speed to Pittsburgh's front seven. Veteran cornerback Ike Taylor—who suffered an arm injury of his own in the third quarter—sang Shazier's praises as the youngster prepared to start the regular season.
"He"s one of those Troy [Polamalu], Maurkice [Pouncey] kind of guys where you can't hold him back regardless of what you want to say," said Taylor, via ESPN.com's Scott Brown. "He's one of those guys. He has that kind of talent."
NFL.com's Marc Sessler had a similar impression of Shazier after watching some of his tape:
Hopefully for Steeler fans, Shazier's injury isn't of the severe variety. Getting live game reps in defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau's complex schemes is invaluable to Shazier's development, but Pittsburgh also has to bear in mind his long-term health.
The priority is to protect both Shazier and Jones, two prospective franchise cornerstones. The team's depth at linebacker is going to be tested for sure. At least the Steelers' next game is at home against the 0-3 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who might be the worst team in football.
