After coming off a 41-39 win in their preseason opener, the Kansas City Chiefs will visit the Carolina Panthers in Week 2 with a lot to improve on before the regular season gets underway. If you hope to see the Chiefs have their starters on the field for a while, you’ll follow this exhibition game closely, as some of them will see plenty of action.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid announced earlier this week that quarterback Alex Smith will play the entire first half, per Randy Covitz of The Kansas City Star. Smith went 3-of-5 passing with a fumble and was also sacked once through three brief drives last week, all in the first quarter.
However, the Chiefs will be without running back Jamaal Charles. According to ESPN.com's Adam Teicher , Charles will not play Sunday night due to a bruised foot. He did not travel to Charlotte with the team. Charles is expected to play next Saturday when the Chiefs host the Vikings.
Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, who sat out in the first preseason game, will return to the gridiron after having surgery on his ankle during the offseason. Panthers coach Ron Rivera said Newton will play the first quarter, per Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer, but is unsure if he will remain on the field afterwards.
With the game being televised on Fox in front of a live national audience, football fanatics will get a chance to watch Chiefs rookie running back and punt returner De’Anthony Thomas, whose 80-yard punt return touchdown last week against the Bengals went viral.
The Chiefs and Panthers will play at 7 p.m. CT on Fox.
