The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has ordered U.S. airlines to avoid flying in the airspace over Syria, effective immediately and until further notice.
"Due to the presence of anti-aircraft weapons among the extremist groups and ongoing fighting in various locations throughout Syria," the notice reads, "there is a continuing significant potential threat to civil aviation operating in Syrian airspace."
The notice to airmen (NOTAM) was issued late Monday, replacing a prior notice that advised carriers against flying in the airspace, but did not restrict them from doing so. The FAA's decision to further restrict airspace in the Middle East comes a month after a Malaysia Airlines flight was shot down while flying through Ukrainian airspace. Read more...
