Crystal Palace are frantically looking for a new manager following the sudden departure of Tony Pulis , and according to several sources, Malky Mackay could be the man to take the job in the coming days.
The Scot has been without a job since getting sacked by Cardiff City in December of 2013, but BBC Sport's David Ornstein expects the club to approach the 42-year-old nonetheless:
The London Evening Standard's Simon Johnson says Mackay is convinced he has what it takes to salvage Palace's season before it has even started, and he has the backing of Sir Alex Ferguson to take the job.
Assistant Keith Millen will fill in as long as the club is without a permanent manager, and his first task will be Saturday's fixture against Arsenal. He told reporters he was "shocked" when he heard the news, as reported by Johnson:
I am shocked at the moment. I had a phone call from the chairman last night and we had a brief conversation.
I have come in this morning and we will see what happens. I had no sign this was coming. We were frustrated because we maybe didn’t get the players in that we wanted but we have had a good pre -season with the players and were looking forward to the game tomorrow.
It’s been a big shock to myself and the players. It’s going to be a tough act to follow for someone.
Pulis took control of the relegation-threatened Eagles in 2013 and had an immediate impact on the club, as shared by Sky Sports:
The club well exceeded expectations under his guidance, finishing the 2013-14 Premier League season in 11th place. But rumours quickly started to spread that Pulis was unhappy with the club's reluctance to spend in the transfer market, and on Friday, the straw finally broke.
Mackay 's managerial career got off to a rocky start with Watford , but his work with Cardiff firmly put him on the map as one of Britain's brightest young managers. Controversial owner Vincent Tan didn't make life easy on him, but he still managed to guide the team to the Premier League, an impressive feat.
Pulis greatly exceeded expectations during his time with the Eagles, so whoever takes the reins at the club next will face the difficult task of rivalling his performances. While the job may appear tantalising for younger managers looking to get back in the Premier League, the shadow of Pulis could make for a very short stint at the helm.
