The calm before the launch: Preparing for a year in space

NASA astronaut Scott Kelly rocketed off to the International Space Station on Friday with Russian cosmonauts Mikhail Kornienko and Gennady Padalka. But Kelly will be above Earth for much longer than his two Russian companions.


Kelly will live aboard the ISS for a year in an effort to study the effects on the human body of living in space. (A typical ISS mission lasts for about six months.)
