Hundreds of millions of people live in earthquake hazard zones, from the infamous San Andreas Fault that cleaves across California to densely populated South Asia. Few of these people have the benefit of receiving early warnings of an oncoming quake, when mere seconds could save lives
Now, researchers from the U.S. Geological Survey, NASA and two universities say that a low cost approach using crowdsourced GPS, and other positioning data from some of the estimated one billion smartphones worldwide, can actually detect the ground movement from fault motion that marks the start of a large earthquake, thereby triggering rapidly disseminating electronic alerts.
