ISIS militants smash artifacts at UNESCO World Heritage Site in Iraq

Hatra, the UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back more than 2,000 years, has become the latest victim of the rampage by Islamic State militants through Iraq and Syria.


The extremist group posted video on Friday of militants defacing Hatra near Mosul, Iraq, because they say it promotes idolatry. This is just the latest ancient site targeted by ISIS, which has moved to destroy several irreplaceable relics in the area.



The footage, branded with the now-notorious black flag of ISIS, shows militants using axes and hammers to chip away at stone facades and statues at Hatra. At one point, men can be seen knocking stone faces off the wall using sledgehammers. Read more...
