Sri Lanka vs. Scotland: Highlights, Scorecard, Report from Cricket World Cup

Kumar Sangakkara stole the show as Sri Lanka powered past Scotland at the Cricket World Cup.

Sri Lanka had already qualified for the quarter-finals before the game with Scotland, but they had a higher position in the pool—and with it a more favourable draw—to play for.

Batting first, Sangakkara racked up his fourth ODI century in a row—a record—and supported by a ton from Tillakaratne Dilshan, Sri Lanka posted 363 for 9.

It was a total that was always going to prove beyond Scotland, and the Associate Nation were all out for 215.

Scotland started well with the ball as Alasdair Evans claimed the wicket of Lahiru Thirimanne.

Any Scotland celebrations were soon snuffed out, as Dilshan and Sangakkara feasted on what was served up to them.

In a partnership of 195, both Dilshan and Sangakkara notched up centuries.

Josh Davey can head back home with his head held high, as he can tell his family in years to come that he took the prize scalps of Dilshan, Mahela Jayawardene and Sangakkara in quick succession.

The closing overs were a mixture of the sublime and the ridiculous for Sri Lanka. With a clear feeling that the Sri Lankans felt they had enough on the board, their middle and lower order attempted to smash every ball out of the park.

Skipper Angelo Mathews hit four successive sixes in a 21-ball 51, but he departed when going for a fifth in a row.

Sri Lanka were in danger of being bowled out inside the 50 overs, but Nuwan Kulasekara and Dushmantha Chameera took them to 363 for 9.

Scotland were desperate for a solid start. They did not get it. Off the second ball of the innings, Kyle Coetzer was undone by a lack of pace from Lasith Malinga and offered a simple return catch to the bowler.

Preston Mommsen and Freddie Coleman set about rebuilding the innings after three quick wickets had set Scotland back. The pair put on 118, each making half-centuries, at a brisk rate.

But as brisk as they were scoring, it was not enough and they both fell when attempting to step up the pace.

The Scotland tail was exposed and it did not wag as they were bundled out for 215 in 43.1 overs as Sri Lanka won by 148 runs.

Sri Lanka complete their pool phase with four wins and two defeats and will finish in third place if Bangladesh fail to beat New Zealand and Australia defeat Scotland.

That would mean a likely quarter-final with South Africa who finish their group campaign against the UAE on Thursday.
