ZAGREB — People living on the Adriatic coast of Croatia have had a rough few days. A strong northwestern wind called bura (also known as bora), brought by an intense storm system known regionally as Cyclone Rea, broke all sorts of records on Thursday, traveling as fast as 165 km per hour (103 mph), according to Croatia's Meteorological and Hydrological service
While this is just short of the record 174.6 kmh (108 mph) measured in the Crotian city of Split in 2004, individual reports claim the winds were far stronger than that. The Marine Meteorological Center issued a warning Thursday, claiming that at certain spots under the Velebit Mountain range, which is the highest in Croatia, the wind speed was as high as 130 knots — a wild 150 mph.
