Are we headed toward our first true pick ’em Super Bowl of all time?
As of early Sunday, several sportsbooks in Las Vegas and online had dropped the Super Bowl XLIX betting odds for the New England Patriots, who were consensus one-point favorites but are now down to pick ’em.
The reason was a surge of late Seattle money, which OddsShark.com analysts predicted would continue up til game time.
The Golden Nugget in Vegas even moved the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks to one-point favorites for about six hours on Saturday with thousands of bettors in town just to wager on the big game. Only five times in Super Bowl history has the line closed at less than a field goal, ending up at -1 twice.
A few spots still have the Patriots favored, including online sportsbook Bovada, which remains the best place to wager on the Seahawks at +1.5. Bovada had New England as high as -2 before dropping the line.
Seattle actually opened as a small favorite at many sportsbooks before the betting public jumped on the Patriots after they routed the Indianapolis Colts 45-7 in the AFC Championship Game as seven-point chalk.
The Seahawks are looking to repeat under similar circumstances to last year, when they opened as small favorites, saw most bettors throw their money on the Denver Broncos and then upset them in a 43-8 rout as two-point underdogs.
That result rewarded sportsbooks in Nevada with their best outcome ever, winning a record $19.7 million. The underdog has won four of the past five Super Bowls straight-up, although repeat participants who are dogs the second time around are 0-5 SU and against the spread.
However, New England has lost in each of its last two Super Bowl appearances—both times to the New York Giants—and the team is just 1-5-1 ATS all-time in the big game. The winner of the Super Bowl has covered the spread in eight of the past nine, and with such a small number again this year, bettors will likely only need to worry about who emerges victorious and takes home the Vince Lombardi Trophy at the end of the game.
