Saturday Recap
Manchester United struggled in the first half against Sunderland but pulled away for a 2-0 win in the second, in part thanks to referee Roger East.
The 49-year-old awarded the hosts a—correct—penalty in the 64th minute after John O'Shea brought down Radamel Falcao and proceeded to hand Wes Brown the red card, even after the two Black Cats pleaded with the official he had penalised the wrong player.
As shared by MailOnline Sport, Brown had been fantastic guarding Falcao up until that point:
Telegraph Sport remembered FIFA rejected a vote to experiment with video technology to aid referees earlier in the day:
Rooney converted the penalty and later bagged himself a brace, becoming the first player in Premier League history to score double-digit goals in 11 consecutive season, via Squawka:
Southampton continued their slide with a 1-0 loss at the hands of West Bromwich Albion, Saido Berahino scoring the only goal of the match after just two minutes.
The Saints are now in real danger of falling out of the top five if in-form Liverpool can get past Manchester City on Sunday, while West Brom keep putting distance between themselves and the relegation zone. Call it the Tony Pulis-Effect, per football writer Kristian Sturt:
Tim Sherwood's start as manager of Aston Villa has been rocky so far, and that trend continued on Saturday as he Villans lost 1-0 to Newcastle United.
Bleacher Report UK couldn't help but take a shot at the former Spurs manager:
West Ham United's push for a top-four finish looks to be over after Sam Allardyce's men fell to Crystal Palace at home, losing 3-1. Glenn Murray scored twice for the visitors and Scott Dann also found the net, while Enner Valencia pulled one back for the hosts late.
Murray's excellent afternoon came to an abrupt ending in the second half, running into his second yellow card. But his dismissal could hardly dampen the spirits of Alan Pardew's men. The Eagles manager had nothing but praise for the match-winner, via Bleacher Report's Sam Tighe:
Things were looking rosy for Sam Allardyce and West Ham just a couple of weeks ago, but as shared by Eurosport.com, their recent form has all but killed their chances of grabbing a ticket into one of the European competitions:
Swansea City beat Burnley 1-0 thanks to an own-goal from Kieran Trippier, while Stoke City grabbed the win over Hull City by the same score through Peter Crouch.
All eyes will be on Anfield on Sunday as in-form Liverpool host defending champions Manchester City in a clash that will have massive implications on the battle for Europe, while Everton will try to carry their Europa League momentum with them to London to play Arsenal.
