Those hoping to see Joaquin Phoenix don a high-collared red cape and vanquish villains on the big screen as neurosurgeon-turned-psychedelic sorcerer Doctor Strange will be sorely disappointed.
Rumors that the Oscar-winning star of Her and The Master would play the title character in Marvel's upcoming film adaption of the comic series were put to rest Thursday when Deadline reported that talks between the studio and Phoenix's talent agency have fallen through.
While Marvel still believes Phoenix would have been a great choice for the role, after three months of negotiation, neither side was able to reach an agreement, according to Deadline. Among other big name actors considered by the studio were Tom Hardy, Jared Leto and Benedict Cumberbatch. Reports that Training Day's Ethan Hawke was being cast for the part were also dismissed.
