Chinese-state newspaper The People's Daily released a scathing editorial on Wednesday, saying the end result for democracy protesters in Hong Kong would be "disastrous."
The editorial, which called on the protests to cease immediately, was printed on National Day, a holiday meant to celebrate the People's Republic of China. But in Hong Kong, when the national flag was raised that day, protesters turned their back with their arms crossed in silent protest.
The massive demonstrations in the central business district of Hong Kong are a result of public outrage over the selection process for candidates in the 2017 election. The potential chief executive, the leader of Hong Kong, would have to be screened by a Beijing panel before voting occurred. Hundreds of thousands of pro-democracy supporters have taken to the streets over the last week in Hong Kong to show their opposition to the government and the election process. Read more...
