South Africa took control of the third Test as they reached 227-3 at stumps on Day 2 in Cape Town, replying to West Indies’ first innings total of 329.
Faf du Plessis made 68 at Newlands with captain Hashim Amla unbeaten on 55.
The home side took the final four WI wickets for 53 runs in the morning session, with Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel picking up two victims apiece.
The men from the Caribbean resumed on 276-6, but any hopes of reaching 400 vanished when their last remaining specialist batsman, Justin Blackwood, was trapped lbw by Steyn in the fifth over having added 11 to his overnight score of 45.
The Proteas reached 48-1 at lunch in their reply, with Dean Elgar trapped lbw by Jason Holder for eight with the last ball before the adjournment.
Fellow opener Alviro Petersen departed for 42 midway through the afternoon session when a direct hit from Blackwood at backward point found him short of his ground.
South Africa reached 135-2 at tea but lost du Plessis in the final session as he was stumped by Dinesh Ramdin off left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn.
Du Plessis had hit eight boundaries in his innings but played a loose shot with a second century of the series a distinct possibility.
Amla put on 70 for the fourth wicket with Ab de Villiers (32 not out), bringing up his 28th Test half-century in the process, before rain brought a premature end to proceedings.
South Africa lead the three-match series 1-0 after an innings victory at Centurion before a rain-affected draw in Port Elizabeth.
