The Houston Astros may be close to rounding out their starting rotation.
Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported that the Astros are aggressively pursuing free-agent right-hander Ryan Vogelsong:
They aren't the only ones, though. A few different franchises have registered interest in the 37-year-old over the last week or so.
On Jan. 11, Jon Morosi of Fox Sports reported that the Colorado Rockies were on the trail:
A week later, ESPN's Jim Bowden mentioned the Texas Rangers as a possible destination:
Vogelsong went 8-13 in 2014 with a 4.00 earned-run average with the San Francisco Giants. In his 10-year career, he has a record of 49-57 and an ERA of 4.42.
Injuries and poor performance blighted Vogelsong's early time in the league, but since arriving in San Francisco in 2011, he's been a solid back-of-the-rotation guy. He also has plenty of postseason experience, having helped the Giants win two World Series titles.
Although he lacks the cachet of a Max Scherzer or James Shields, Vogelsong is a proven commodity in the league. In what is a weak free-agent class, he'd be a nice addition for somebody looking to add a No. 4 or 5 starter.
