Pittsburgh Steelers safety Mike Mitchell has plenty of critics arguing that he was among the weakest lines on the Steelers defense. After Pittsburgh's 30-17 Wild Card Round defeat to the Baltimore Ravens, Mitchell provided a possible reason for his poor play.
NFL.com's Aditi Kinkhabwala reported that the 27-year-old played through a torn groin:
Veteran Steelers reporter Alan Robinson notes this isn't necessarily a new issue:
There's no question that Mitchell was a disappointment in 2014, especially after Pittsburgh gave him $25 million over five years in the offseason. Opposing quarterbacks targeted him early and often to much success.
However, even the best would struggle to play at a high level with a torn groin. Once Mitchell gets surgery and has a few months off to recuperate, he could be in for a strong rebound campaign come 2015.
