With Borussia Dortmund languishing down in 17th position in the Bundesliga, Jurgen Klopp looks as though he may face a fight to keep hold of his very best players. And while the effervescent attacking talents of Marco Reus may stir the most interest amongst supporters, Mats Hummels is arguably the club's most important player.
According to reports in Germany (h/t David Wright of the Express) the defender is keen for a move to Manchester United or Arsenal, with both Premier League clubs looking to bolster their defensive ranks.
In the piece, it’s claimed that Hummels is frustrated by Dortmund’s astonishingly poor form and the German defender didn’t mince his words when offering his assessment on the teams recent displays.
“We’ve managed pretty well at home in recent weeks, but not at all away,” said Hummels, per Wright’s piece. “It’s pretty astonishing that we are so pathetic.”
Here’s a look at the kind of qualities Hummels could add should he move to a Premier League side:
Both United and the Gunners are in desperate need of defensive reinforcements going into the second half of the season and Hummels would be a wonderful acquisition. Not only is the 26-year-old an excellent orthodox defender, but he’s capable of insouciantly striding out of the back four and getting attacks started with crisp passes into midfield.
Bleacher Report’s Stefan Bienkowski thinks that despite not being that quick across the ground, Hummels would be perfectly suited for English football’s top flight:
For Louis van Gaal and Arsene Wenger, there are few better options out there at the moment. Bleacher Report’s Sam Tighe runs the rule over some more of the Dortmund man’s best qualities:

According to Bruce Archer of the Daily Star, the player is keen on a move to the Premier League but is undecided on whether to join Arsenal or United. The piece also suggests that Dortmund value Hummels at a whopping £40 million, but may accept less given their current plight.
A January purchase may mean that a club may have to pay an inflated premium for the services of the defender, but for two sides that have a dearth of options at the back, it’d be money well spent.
Both United and Arsenal will be looking to cement their status in the Premier League’s top four in the second half of the season and Hummels would be the ideal man to expedite that process.
