In the corner of any given Miz match, fans are delighted with the actions of the increasingly likable Damien Mizdow.
What was once the latest gag in a string of entertaining impersonations has become a niche character that has caught fire among a more cynical fanbase of today—one that tends to root for underutilized talent and underdogs at every turn.
In an otherwise unassuming role as a stunt double, Damien Mizdow has become a star.
Mizdow hilariously mimics Miz's every action with the sincerity and purpose of a method actor, but with the execution of an amateur adoring fan.
Stunt doubles are the unsung heroes in Hollywood, often taking bold risks that their A-list celebrity counterparts are too valuable to endure. That's where the comedy aspect of Mizdow takes off.
Mizdow isn't so much a stunt double, by definition, as he is a lackey who is entertaining himself and his co-star just as much as he is the fans. Stunt doubles are dedicated to action. Yet, Mizdow is dedicated to acting. He's a rare thespian body double who feigns knee injuries to complement his counterpart.
In a current product where the roster is filled with accidental midcarders once destined for bigger things, Miz and Mizdow have each made the most of a bad situation.
Both former Money in the Bank winners, Miz and Mizdow teased fans with main event chops early in their careers. But after each saw auspicious starts crumble into violent declines, they've seized relevancy through a dynamic that is good enough to add depth and meaning to WWE's erratic tag team division.
Mizdow's resurrection has become a story in and of itself, as WWE announcers have made it a point to note how his growing popularity could be threatening to The Miz.
WWE teased a bit of tension between the two when Miz prematurely tagged himself into a recent tag team match against Los Matadores.
An eventual split is only natural. A self-absorbed Hollywood character like The Miz will eventually take exception to sharing his spotlight. But just as their once-promising singles careers were discarded in the abyss that is WWE's current midcard, a future Miz-Mizdow split could carry the same fate.
Miz and Mizdow are currently one of WWE's best acts. With the Survivor Series main event monopolizing WWE's top stars, the tandem figures to have a major hand in carrying the undercard.
Their pairing highlights the likability of a comedic performer juxtaposed against an aloof, pampered Hollywood tool. Few will admit it, but Mizdow owes much of his recent success to the Miz playing it straight as a naturally despicable heel.
They have a good thing going. It's far from broke, so why fix it?
