LOS ANGELES — Some of the key time-travel science of Interstellar isn't billions of light years away — it's in your smartphone


Specifically, in your GPS.



In a conversation with Mashable about his book, The Science of Interstellar, astrophysicist Kip Thorne went on a fascinating tangent about how Einstein's theory of relativity— which caused the film's fictional astronauts to experience time-slowing while in the proximity of massive gravity — applies right here on Earth.


"Yeah, it does underly how the GPS system works," Thorne, a major consultant and executive producer of Interstellar, told Mashable. "It’s the same kind of slowing of time you see in Interstellar, just not as extreme." Read more...
