For nearly three decades, Arthur Fellig — otherwise known as “Weegee” — ruled the world of Manhattan street photography. From 1935, Weegee captured gritty shots of crime scenes, accidents, convicted criminals and the throbbing hum of New York City nightlife in general. Using the teletype at the Manhattan Police Headquarters, he often beat the cops to the scene. The makeshift darkroom in the trunk of his car enabled him to quickly develop his photos and send them off to the tabloids.


In the late 1940s, Weegee began experimenting with photographic manipulation. His subjects were often film stars (he spent four years in Hollywood), world leaders both past and present, and figures of the art world. He even turned the camera upon himself Read more...
