Iceland's Bardarbunga volcano was shaken by a 5.7 magnitude earthquake on Tuesday, the largest temblor to rumble beneath the volcano since the ongoing period of intense seismic activity began on Aug. 16.
There have been more than 2,300 earthquakes recorded over the past three days alone associated with the volcano and more than 500 earthquakes since midnight on Tuesday morning, as magma moves beneath the surface of the volcano, potentially rising to make contact with a glacier that sits on top of the large volcano and causing a significant eruption.
By spewing ash high into the atmosphere, such an eruption could disrupt international air travel and potentially even cool the planet's climate for several months to a couple of years. Read more...
