Places to Visit During the Fall Season

Out of all the seasons, autumn seems to conjure up the most positive connotations by many people. From pumpkin spicing everything and apple picking to hot cocoa and spiced rum, there’s just something about this season that just makes us happy. If you’re one of those people who live in a city sans seasons (We’re talking to you, San Diego!), you might have to go somewhere else to get your taste of autumn. Even if you don’t, though, this can be an ideal time of year to travel. Read on for more thoughts on places to visit during the fall season. Whether it’s a weekend getaway or more than that, take Nike’s advice: Just do it.

Rocky Mountain High

There are many gorgeous places abroad to visit during autumn that will shock and astound you but if you prefer to stay stateside, you can’t get much better than the state of Colorado. Any mountain town such as Telluride and Aspen will leave you speechless, but you really don’t even need to leave Denver to be awestruck. As this Travel + Leisure article notes, “The leaves start turning early in the resort towns outside Denver, but the city’s foliage takes center stage during October, when you can see it nicely from the Cherry Creek Bike Trail, or along the High Line Canal, lined with brilliant yellow cottonwood trees.”

Portland, Maine

When you think autumn your mind likely automatically goes to New England, and this lobster-filled town is one of the best areas to admire gorgeous fall foliage. The brilliant colors of the sumac, elm, oak, ash, and maples will leave your mouth agape. While there are plenty of wonderful places to visit in Portland proper, Bradbury Mountain State Park in Freeport (about 20 minutes away) has long been thought to be the best place to view the vibrant shades of fall. If you stay in Portland, make sure to take advantage of the incredible whale watching, fall festival scene, and art district.

Minneapolis/St. Paul

If you know anything about this gorgeous area, you know that their winters are brutal. So make sure to get out and enjoy the smell, sounds, and sights while you can before scrambling indoors. The Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon has been touted as “the most beautiful urban marathon” in the country. If you’re not a runner, though, you can still enjoy a walk, easy breezy jog, or a bicycle ride around one of their many lovely lakes.

San Francisco

You’ve likely heard the saying; “The coldest winter I ever spent was that summer in San Francisco.” That’s why autumn is the perfect time to visit this idyllic city, as the temperatures are surprisingly warm. Take a jaunt to wine country, bike across the Golden Gate Bridge, or hit the beach. As anyone in San Francisco will tell you, though, you can never underestimate the bayside breezes, so bring a jacket!

New York City

While mountain towns are, indeed, great for seeing fall foliage, there’s nothing quite like the Big Apple for an amazing urban autumn experience. As renowned travel site Fodors.com notes, “Following the relatively slow summer months, the cultural calendar swiftly kicks into high gear with film festivals, Broadway openings, and more, all while the trees in Central Park turn beautiful shades of orange.”

This is San Diego-based company Slippa’s CEO’s favorite place to visit around this time of year. “Living and working in America’s Finest City is amazing, of course, but there’s nothing quite like the feel of New York City in autumn. With the streets abuzz, the fall trees showing off their killer colors, and cultural events every hour on the hour, I make sure to come here every year during October,” Jeff Long gushes.

Providence, Rhode Island

If you can squeeze in a trip this fall, we highly recommend it, as this is the best time of year to visit this scenic capital city. Take in the incredible colors of the season on the Blackstone Valley Explorer riverboat or at Roger Williams Park and Zoo during the day, while nighttime will amaze with bonfires that light the city’s rivers (WaterFire). If you’re up for a drive, head out on Route 1 from Westerly to Wickford and bring a picnic for a day to remember. Make sure to bring your camera for this trip, as you’re sure to capture some amazing fall photos.

There are a ton of great places to visit during the autumn season but, if you choose any one of the places off this list, we promise you a trip for the record books.
