Target promises $10 million for data breach victims, if they can prove it

A federal judge has approved a class-action settlement in which Target promised to pay each victim of its 2013 data breach up to $10,000 if they can prove damage

But there's a catch: The company previously argued in court that consumers have no way of showing they suffered any harm. And it's not yet clear what kind of proof the retailer will require.

Under the terms of the settlement, approved in Minneapolis on Thursday morning, Target will establish a $10 million fund for victims and will require consumers to provide documentation that their accounts were compromised. That means most people whose data was comprised will receive far less than $10,000 each; allocating the full $10,000 per victim would only cover 2,000 people. Read more...
