Kurdish rebel leader calls for end to conflict with Turkey

ISTANBUL, Turkey — More than 30 years after a Kurdish rebel group took up arms against the Turkish government, the group's leader is calling for peace from his prison cell.



Abdullah Ocalan, a hero to many members of Turkey’s sizable Kurdish population, is urging a political solution to the conflict that has claimed more than 40,000 lives


Though Ocalan’s group, the Kurdistan Worker’s Party or PKK, is listed as a terrorist organization in the U.S., the European Union and Turkey, it is viewed as a savior to many of Turkey’s Kurds who were suffocated for years by the state — banned from even speaking their own language or giving their children Kurdish names.
